Diesel Additives
BIZOL Extends Diesel Engine Life
As diesel engine technology evolved, so have requirement for high-quality diesel fuels that withstand rigorous demands of modern engines providing excellent performance, torque, and fuel economy. The need to reduce vehicular emissions has resulted in the requirement for low-sulfur diesel fuel. As a consequence diesel fuel has lost much of its natural lubricity has lead to the need for complex and sophisticated additive packs to ensure improved performance.
Although the introduction of ULS diesel has been successful, there are some issues to be aware of, especially with regard to older vehicles. After-market diesel fuel additives, correctly applied, help counter these issues.
A side effect of the low sulfur content is reduction of the natural lubricity of diesel fuel oil as well as its electrical conductivity. Another issue is that ULS fuel has a greater affinity for water, and this leads to the risk of moisture build-up in the fuel tank that can cause corrosion and the growth of biological organisms. To a degree, these issues are dealt with by the additive packs to the extent that ULS fuel can be safely used on virtually all vehicles.
Tiny insoluble deposits collect in the fuel system, injector nozzles, on valves, and in the combustion chamber. Over time, the injectors, which operate at extremely high pressures and have exceptionally fine nozzles, become clogged by these deposits, and performance and fuel economy, are affected. Another issue that has been reported since the introduction of ULS fuel is an increase in the occurrence of filters plugging due to impaired cold weather performance of ULS diesel.
How Additives Help
• Lubricity: to improve lubrication properties
• Conductivity: prevent static build-up
• Cloud and pour point depressants: to lower the temperatures when wax crystals form and prevent fuel flow
• Biocides: to kill and prevent microbial growth
• Stabilizers: to allow for longer storage
Notable exceptions to this list are water dispersers, as these generally cause more problems than they solve, and detergents that prevent build-up of soot and deposits. While moisture build-up will be prevented by regular draining of the fuel filter, after-market additives may be required to deal with other issues.
BIZOL Additives
Recognizing that fuel manufacturers cannot cater to every possible additive need, BIZOL has launched the BIZOL Diesel Additive that provides added engine protection. Significantly, it contains detergents that help clean fuel injection systems restoring power and economy plus a powerful antioxidant to fight corrosion caused by moisture. The additive enhances the fuel’s lubricity, reduces emissions due to its ability to remove build-up and deposits from fuel injectors, and improves starting performance.
A second additive, BIZOL Diesel-Antigel maintains the fluidity of ULS diesel down to minus 31 Celcius or 24ºFahrenheit, preventing wax formation and cold weather starting problems.
